Experience The Bourgeois Town of Lekki

Originally a shanty town of 300,000 inhabitants, Lekki has evolved over the last 35 years to become the most sought-after residential area in the country.

In 1989, Military Governor Raji Rasaki followed up on earlier unsuccessful ground works by his civilian predecessor, Lateef Jakande, to demolish the shanty town of Maroko, signalling the transition to a bourgeois premier location for rich and influential living in what is known today as Lekki.

It is widely believed that the town was named after a Portguese sailor who dealt in slave trading and salt-making in the 1800s. Mr. Lecqi was popular among locals, and this led to his immortalization.
